Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a temporary authorization for the practical training directly related to students’ major fields of study. Here, the “Practical Training” includes employment, paid or unpaid internship, practicum participation, co-operative education experience etc.
In other words, Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is the kind of training for the students required for their degree.
To apply for CPT jobs, the student must be enrolled for a course that requires and necessitates off-campus employment, such as internship. Students can apply for the CPT jobs during their standard academic year (full-time enrollment) and during their annual vacations.
The students applying for the CPT job must get their letter from their academic institution, which should contain the following information:
CPT job can be full-time (over 20 hours a week) or part-time (20 hours a week or less). If the student has worked for 365 days or more (12 months) in full-time CPT job, he or she is no longer eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT), another kind of employment authorization available to F-1 students.
A part-time CPT job or a less than 12 months full-time CPT job doesn’t affect the OPT eligibility of the student.
Students are allowed to change their hour limits in full time or part-time OPT jobs. For instance, a student may change his or her weekly working hours from 10 hours to 15 hours. There is no need for new authorization in this case. However, changing from part-time to full time, or vice versa, requires the new authorization.
A CPT job is employer-specific, i.e. students can just work for the authorized employer. The CPT authorization is issued by a sponsoring institution via SEVIS (Student Exchange Visitor Information System) database and the Department of Homeland Security international student/scholar tracking database.
